beautiful braided calzone

i discovered this braided calzone recipe from a friend’s blog a year or so ago. we had a lot of “pizza” like ingredients in the fridge so we decided to make it!

it was delicious! our calzone was filled with marinara sauce, fresh tomatoes, spinach, onions, garlic, and mozzarella cheese, all seasoned with garlic powder, oregano, and basil (we decided to go vegetarian this week!). we served it with warmed up marinara sauce, to dip the calzone in.

here’s a tutorial on how to braid the dough: braided calzone tutorial. unlike this recipe, we baked our calzone at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes.

a few notes:

  • we tried Trader Joe’s whole wheat pizza dough for the first time! it tasted good but perhaps a bit too bready, especially for a calzone that is already on the bready side. i think the whole wheat dough would do better for pizza.
  • next time i think we’ll use plain pizza dough and fill it with a lot more cheese! maybe also some meat!
